In this class we will learn how to knit a toe up sock with a Fleegle heel on Zoom. This design is relatively easy, fits like a glove thanks to gussets, and is toe up, so you can knit until you run out of yarn. We will look at and discuss other popular sock designs, sock yarns and how to get the perfect fit. We will follow a free pattern by Chase Clark, the owner of the Black Squirrel yarn shop in Berkeley, CA, with a few minor modifications. The classes includes an overhead view of my hands as I demonstrate techniques, a recording of both Zoom classes and additional instruction videos to ensure you understand every step. This class meets twice and starts 12-2pm PST, January 31st and February 7th.
Materials needed include:
- Approximately 100 gm of light colored fingering weight sock yarn. Many sock yarns contain a percentage of nylon for durability. Note that Paton’s Kroy is slightly heavier and you will need to purchase two balls, since each only provides enough yarn for a single sock
- Size 1, cable knitting needles 24″ or longer to knit magic loop. In addition to this students can try knitting with two cable needles or double pointed needles. Students can also try a size 1.2 or 2 needle if they are a very tight knitter, or are using Paton’s Kroy yarn, or even a size 0 needle if they knit loosely.
- Students who are nervous about knitting on a small scale can knit a slipper out of sport or DK weight yarn. I suggest student chose a needle at least one size smaller than normal to get the desired dense fabric. I would use a size 3 needle with sport weight yarn and a size 4 with DK weight yarn.
- Students will need a tapestry needle and a pair of scissors.
A pattern, videos and a Zoom link are provided upon registration.
